National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is more than a federal holiday. It’s an opportunity for organizations to reflect on their role in creating equitable, inclusive workplaces. At StratHR Solutions, we believe that businesses play a vital role in advancing reconciliation by fostering environments where Indigenous employees feel safe, valued, and respected.
Understanding the Legacy of Residential Schools
Residential schools were designed to erase Indigenous identity, language, and culture. The intergenerational trauma continues to affect Indigenous communities today, including barriers to employment, education, and economic opportunities.
What Employers Can Do
Acknowledge and educate: Provide learning opportunities about the history and ongoing impacts of colonization. Encourage staff to participate in training and reflection.
Act on the TRC’s Calls to Action: Several TRC recommendations call on businesses to adopt equitable hiring practices, support Indigenous economic development, and create culturally safe workplaces.
Commit beyond September 30: Reconciliation is not a one-day initiative. It should be embedded into organizational policies, recruitment strategies, and workplace culture.
Moving Forward Together
Employers have the power to create change by opening doors, removing systemic barriers, and supporting reconciliation in action. By doing so, workplaces become more diverse, inclusive, and resilient.
